Confident Curly Kiddos

“In the US, we found that curls were both an emotionally and culturally charged topic for women… Dove Hair uncovered several powerful insights around curls in the US. Shockingly, only 4 out of 10 girls with curly-hair think their hair is beautiful. However, there was a silver lining: these girls are significantly more likely to love their curls if curly-women in their lives love their own.” – DOVE (Love Your Curls Campaign)

I will never forget when Ryan, my husband, pulled me aside one night after I had had a rough-hair morning.  He talked to me about being aware of the negative things I was saying about my own curly hair.  That morning, Declan had been watching me get ready and later that day she had asked Ryan if he could make her hair straight after her bath.  My daughter, who is now 6-years-old, has the most gorgeous long, spiral curly hair.  It reminds me of Felicity (remember that 90’s show?).  Ryan didn’t tell me this to make me feel bad, he told me this to remind me that children adsorb almost everything we say and do and that if we wanted Declan to be confident, we as parents need to be confident.

As a child I watched my own mother and big sister struggle with their curly hair and this in part taught me to dislike my own.  We are all human and it is easy to get caught up in the negative but we need to be aware of who is watching and learning from us.  Additionally, self-love comes from within and this is so very important.  I love this quote by Amy Schumer, “I say if I am beautiful.  I say if I am strong.  You will not determine my story – I will.”
